On Oct. 31st 2017 Łódź joined the Unesco Creative Cities Network as the City of Film. The National Centre for Film Culture is the focal point for the project.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) is a strategic partner of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, aimed at fostering international cultural, artistic and scientific cooperation to increase universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights. The UCCN was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. The Network, comprising 180 from 72 countries, covers seven creative fields: Crafts and Folk Arts, Media Arts, Film, Design, Gastronomy, Literature and Music.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network aims to strengthen international cooperation between cities that have recognized creativity as a strategic factor of their sustainable development, as well as to support the creation, production, distribution and dissemination of cultural activities, goods and services, develop hubs of creativity and innovation, and broaden opportunities for creators and professionals in the cultural sector; improve access to and participation in cultural life as well as the enjoyment of cultural goods and services, notably for marginalized or vulnerable groups and individuals.

The  objectives  of  the UNESCO Creative  Cities Network are  implemented through sharing experiences, knowledge and best practices; pilot  projects,  partnerships  and  initiatives associating the  public  and  private  sectors and  civil society. In the framework of cooperation professional and artistic exchange programmes and networks are created, the member of the network conduct also studies, research and evaluations basing on their experience.

Among the Cities of Film there are: Rome, Bitola, Bristol, Santos, Bradford, Busan, Galway and Sofia, Yamagata, Qingdao and Terassa. In Poland, Krakow is a City of Literature and Katowice – a City of Music. Among the twin towns of Łódź there are: Lviv – the City of Literature, Puebla – the City of Design and ChengDu – the City of gastronomy.

Situated in the heart of Poland, Łódź is the third most populous Polish city and since the end of the World War II: a film capital of the country.

Basing on a splendid heritage, a half thousand of creative enterprises operate here in the film, video, television, sound and music production, and Łódź Film Commission ensures comprehensive assistance to producers as a co-producer of i.a. 2014 Academy awarded Best Foreign Language film “Ida”.

A strong academic hub, Łódź educates professional staff for the industry in the world-famous Łódź Film School, the alma mater of globally recognised directors and cinematographers: Wajda, Polański, Kieślowski, Sobociński and Edelman ; the Academy of Fine Arts, the Academy of Music and the Higher School for Art and Design.

Łódź is also home to well-renowned film-related festivals and branch events, among which the Transatlantyk Festival, Filmteractive, the Festival of Film Critics Kamera Akcja or the International Nature Film Festival gather both local and international audiences.

The Film Museum and the Se-ma-for Museum of Animation offer unique collections of exhibits, and the newly established National Centre for Film Culture, upon completion of the construction work in 2020, will bring to life spectacular expositions devoted to the audio-visual technologies, the process of filmmaking, and the history of Polish film culture, as well as a multimedia research lab and learning spaces.
